I spent yesterday in Philadelphia and it was awesome. I got to meet new friends, spent time with older friends, and was able to network with so many awesome photographers and really cool creatives in Philly. This was my fifth visit I believe, I’ve been to the city several times, it’s only about two hours from where I live now, so I get out there at least once a year to visit friends and be inspired by the amazing history and awesome art scene.
Yesterday’s trip was because I’m currently looking for work. Philly is a great place to meet other professionals and see what others are doing, to find a way for me to be successful. I say that “I surround myself with successful friends so that I can hopefully be inspired to continue and believe that I will one day be successful as well.
A few weeks ago I contacted a photographer friend I know Colin Lenton . He is an amazing photographer whose dad was my editor [Garry Lenton – Now Editor at the Reading Eagle] when I was at a weekly newspaper. Colin told me about this “Meetup” between photographers and assistants who are looking for work. I fall into the category of both – I’m a photographer – but need to work for someone since I’ve not been too successful recently gaining clients in the Harrisburg area. I was so excited to hear about this event and immediately signed up.
The event, lead by ASMP Philadelphia and held at Philadelphia Productions [Studio which Colin and several Philly-based photographers work out of regularly] was the first one they have held, so it was a great learning experience for all! There were 10 ASMP Photographers who met with 30 local assistants looking for work. So there was a ton of competition and a lot of standing around, and waiting – BUT it was worth it! I was able to talk with other photographers, some recent grads, others who are trying to grow their own business. The best part was talking with all the ASMP photographers about what they need, and I was inspired by all of them and impressed with their work and how they have become successful. Hopefully the people I met last night will lead me to success as well!
So that’s what brought me to Philly, but I didn’t just go to the meet up, I spent the day in Philly. While in the city, I photographed, and posted on Instagram, click here to see the feed. I also just posted it on Storify.
First I started with meeting a friend-of-a-friend, George Bruno. My friend, Lisa Haas, who lives in Lancaster, connected me with George. He’s a barber, he’s a commercial actor, and so much more… Check him out here. He listened to me as I talked about what I’m doing in Philly, and he gave me great advice about going forward and being successful.
After a short chat with George, I headed to see my friend, Christine Porter. She’s another amazing and inspirational person in my life. I met Christine a few years ago, while I was working as a reporter and we became friends. The best thing about her is she is so supportive to “following your dreams” and “not giving up” – after all, she followed her dream of being an actress and now she’s about to travel the world as a performer with The Ned Show. She relocated to Philly (Where she actually grew up) recently and actually had the day free after doing a presentation at a school in Philly that morning.
The weather had called for strong thunderstorms all afternoon, but when Christine and I left Byrnes Tavern, the sun was shining. We decided to go for a walk around Philly which was awesome, and I saw some places I’ve never been. What a great afternoon! We walked around, found some funny signs, talk to a great Turkish guy who provided us with some good ice cream, and we had a fun trip back-and-forth on the El…
